Michigan Catholic Conference statement about Dismemberment and heartbeat bills

What you need to know

There is a lot of misinformation being spread. We each need to be informed to stop the lies from swaying people away from this ban.

On May 15, 2019, Right to Life of Michigan filed paperwork to begin a petition drive to bypass Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s promised veto of legislation to ban dismemberment abortions. (More about the RTL petition drive here)

Right to Life of Michigan will be using Michigan’s citizen-initiated legislation process to send the bills directly to the Michigan Legislature for passage, entirely bypassing the governor. The name of the initiative is “Michigan Values Life: End Dismemberment Abortions.”

The initiative’s goal is to collect 400,000 signatures. The required number of signatures for initiated legislation is 340,047; 8 percent of the 2018 total votes cast in the governor’s race.

KNOW THE FACTS

The vast majority of people will vote to ban this procedure if they know the truth.

Here is a fact sheet about dismemberment abortion.  This fact sheet includes citations to add credibility to your view.

Here are some of the highlights:

Is dismemberment abortion rare?

According to the National Abortion Federation Abortion Training Textbook – “D&E remains the most prevalent method of second-trimester pregnancy termination in the USA, accounting for 96% of all second trimester abortions”.1

Roughly 100,000 unborn babies die each year after the first trimester.

In 2017, there were 1,777 dismemberment abortions in Michigan reported to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. (Citation)

A good question to ask after citing these numbers: How many babies being dismembered are you ok with?

It is only used in life-of-the-mother cases

The dismemberment ban bills include an exception if the mother’s life is in danger. However, in published research on reasons women have abortions, the pro-abortion Alan Guttmacher Institute has stated that most late-term abortions are done for elective reasons.

In a 2013 Guttmacher Institute study, the authors admitted, “data suggest that most women seeking later terminations are not doing so for reasons of fetal anomaly or life endangerment.”

In addition, many doctors state that if the life of the mother was in danger in a late term pregnancy a caesarean section section would be used.

A good question to ask following this discussion:  Then are you ok with banning abortion when the life of the mother is not a factor?

Dismemberment is only used for ‘fetal anomaly’

In published research on reasons women have abortions, the pro-abortion Alan Guttmacher Institute has stated that most late-term abortions are done for elective reasons.

In a 2013 Guttmacher Institute study, the authors admitted, “data suggest that most women seeking later terminations are not doing so for reasons of fetal anomaly or life endangerment.”

There are many living examples that are evidence that 1) this is not the case, (Examples are Gianna Jessen, Milissa Ohden, Claire Culwell, Josiah Presley, Nic Hoot) and 2) Inaccurate diagnoses occur. (Tim Tebow is just one example)

Good questions to ask after this discussion:  Do you agree with the ban except in cases of fetal anomaly? (if not then they are OK with dismembering a baby for any reason.)

Do you believe people with severe health issues do not have a right to live?

Do you believe parents who have a baby that is diagnosed with a serve terminal illness should have the right to actively kill the baby?

What message does this send people who suffer from dire health issues? Perhaps the family would be better off with them dead?

Ask them to watch this video describing a dismemberment abortion by a Doctor who has performed them.
