When I was in my freshman year of high school, I had to do a presentation on some sort of global issue, and I felt really compelled to do mine on abortion, because what's a bigger issue than the legalized killing of children? As I was making my presentation, I was thinking through the reasons people thought it was okay, and I got stuck on the case of rape. I really felt for women who've experienced that kind of violation, and to have to carry your rapist's baby sounded unbearable. I concluded that abortion was okay in that circumstance, but not in other circumstances because those other women decided to have sex.But something about that wasn't sitting right with me. After about an hour, I was hit by the realization that the reason abortion is wrong in those other circumstances was not about holding people responsible for having sex, but about the fact that abortion is wrong because it intentionally kills innocent human beings. That doesn't change because of how someone was conceived: abortion still intentionally kills innocent human beings, even in the case of rape, so it's still wrong. Children don't deserve to be killed because their biological father committed a vicious crime. They deserve love and support--just like their mothers. Facing the trauma from being raped and being pregnant from it is an extremely difficult thing to go through. Abortion isn't a loving solution, though.
