We Call Her WinnieFor too long, the WI-38 cell line has been spoken of like a lab product—just a number, void of humanity. But WI-38 didn’t come from a factory. She came from a little girl.A child with a beating heart. With dreams that would never be lived. We now know that her life was taken in Sweden in 1962—her lungs harvested and labeled by a number, assigned by Leonard Hayflick, who had contracted with Sven Gard for this outcome. That number—WI-38—has been used to describe her ever since, as if her name and story didn’t matter. But it does matter. Her DNA, her cells, her blood proteins—taken without her voice, without dignity. As we continued to speak about her, something felt hollow. We weren’t talking about a number. We were talking about a child. So we gave her the honor stripped from her.⚪️ We call her Winnie.Today, her cell line—WI-38—is still used in the manufacturing of vaccines, including the MMR and MMRV.Her story is not forgotten.Read more⬇️nodeception.org/we-call-her-winnie/ ...
